How to Trace and Cut Stair Stringer Boards

Learning how to build stairs and specially design them for your outdoor area's specific height and angle is a great skill to learn and keep on-hand for years to come! With your deck measurements in hand, now you're ready to set the lumber down and cut your deck stringer boards to size! Here is the step by step process for how to cut stair stringer boards including some deck professional tips:


  • Always use straight, pressure-treated 2x12s when creating stringer boards.
  • Set two saw horses in position and put on your safety glasses.
  • Use a speed or framing square and clamps to apply and trace your stair dimensions onto the lumber. Attach one clamp to the square at the set riser height. Then, attach another clamp to the tread depth.

  • Position the framing square aligned to the edge of stringer, you will be able to find the exact layout to cut your stairs.
  • Take a carpenter's pencil to trace the dimensions of each stair repeated along the stringer.
  • Adjust the bottom step as needed per your deck staircase layout and stair landing plan.
  • Use a circular saw or jigsaw to create the cuts on your stringer board. Be sure not to overcut your guidelines as it can weaken the structure of the board.
  • Use a handsaw to clean and polish the cut corners.
  • With one stringer board traced, cut and polished; use it as a template for your remaining 2 or 3 boards!
