How Dustin Wowed His Client With A Custom Trex Deck Via DecksDirect

Dustin, a Texas contractor, was hired by a retired couple to build a deck around their new swim spa. The deck was designed to create easy access to the swim spa while also providing a large, low-maintenance entertaining area for the clients' family.

While researching and creating his project plan, Dustin found the low-maintenance composite materials he wanted at DecksDirect. With the industry's largest in-stock selection, DecksDirect was able to get Dustin his materials quickly so his project wouldn't be delayed.

"Every time I placed an order with DecksDirect, I got it quickly," Dustin said. "I got a 36-week lead time on the handrails somewhere else. I had them in a week with DecksDirect."

A lonely swim spa awaiting a custom deck to be built around it

The swim spa was located on a concrete slab in the client's backyard. So Dustin planned and framed out a two-level deck built around the swim spa and the concrete slab.

The clients especially wanted a deck that was easy to maintain, so Dustin went with Trex composite deck boards that never need to be painted or stained, and completed the high-end look with contrasting Trex composite fascia boards.

Dustin stuck with the proven Trex brand for railing, too, adding a Trex Transcend composite railing with stylish round aluminum balusters.

The result was a huge, beautiful two-level deck that's perfectly set up to host friends and family - or facilitate a quiet night in the hot tub under the stars.

When the clients saw their new space, "they were ecstatic," Dustin said. They liked the deck so much, they're already talking to Dustin about a future project.

How To Get This Classic Look For Yourself

Dustin's build started with an outstanding design and some creative problem-solving to make sure the clients could still access pumps and other features around the swim spa. If you're building a deck in the Wimberley, Texas area, you can reach out to Dustin's business, DNA Property Specialties here.

But if you're not in Texas, you don't have to be a pro like Dustin to get a stunning deck like this. DecksDirect's team of experienced project planners is available by phone at 1-888-824-5316 to help plan your project, whether you need a completely new project plan, or just a second set of eyes to look over your plans and help you source materials.

Dustin worked with DecksDirect planner Brittney to get his materials, and called her an "all-star."

"The customer service I received from the very beginning was awesome," Dustin said. "Every time I had a question or needed something, it was really smooth."

If you're looking to get the same classic Trex look that Dustin created, here are some recommendations to get you started:

Trex Transcend Decking in Havana Gold with Spiced Rum Picture Framing

To get the look of natural wood without the heavy maintenance demands, this deck uses Trex Transcend deck boards. Dustin planned a two-toned deck setup with darker boards around the edges of the deck in what's called a "picture frame" layout.

The majority of the deck uses the light brown Havana Gold color, a popular Trex finish that looks like an exotic hardwood. The trim is the dark brown Spiced Rum color, a rich dark tone that makes an amazing accent board. That Spiced Rum color also carries over the edge of the deck to the fascia boards for a really polished look.

Trex Transcend Composite Railing with Round Metal Balusters

Trex's Transcend railing hits many of the same high points as the Transcend deck boards: low-maintenance ease combined with the classic look of painted or stained wood.

You can choose between square composite balusters or round metal balusters within each Trex Transcend Rail Kit - and this deck picks the round aluminum balusters for a timeless touch. The posts and rails are decidedly traditional, and the hint of modern in the black, aluminum balusters creates an eye-catching look that'll never go out of style.

To help your deck submission stand out, here are a couple of our favorite photo-taking tips:

  • Try several different angles: a high shot can show off more of your deck surface. A low shot lets everyone experience your deck the way you do when walking up to it. Try a couple different angles to really show off all aspects of your deck.
  • Include your decor and furniture: once you've completed your deck upgrade, don't take your photos until you've moved your furniture, grill, outdoor decorations and personal touches back into your space. We love seeing lived-in spaces that homeowners are already enjoying!
  • Wait for good weather: it's tempting to snap photos the moment you finish a project. But if it's raining or the sky is covered in dark and gloomy clouds, wait for a dry deck and brighter lighting to really show off the best side of your space.
