Congratulations to Richard E. of Missouri, who wins our Deck of the Month award for July of 2023!

Richard's patriotic deck is decked out in red, white, and blue with Fourth of July decor. It's a spacious deck that's well-designed, with separate seating, eating, and grilling areas and a beautiful picture frame created with deck boards around the sides.

Learn More About This Classic Patriotic Look

This deck really delivers the best in both form and function. It's got a classic look and lots of usable space, neatly divided up into distinctive areas for various activities.

Here are the parts that make it all come together:

Fortress Vintage Series Steel Balusters

The railing puts a gorgeous twist on the classic, natural look of wood. Using Fortress Vintage Series Steel Balusters in place of wood balusters, this deck pairs traditional and modern materials together for a timeless feel.

The added bonus is that steel balusters are much easier to maintain than wood ones - they only need some periodic light cleaning to stay in tip-top condition.

Richard's deck adds some intrigue, too, by mixing in basket balusters in an eye-catching diamond pattern.

Trex Select Decking

Richard's deck uses Trex Select Composite deck boards to get the tried-and-true look of painted wood - in boards that never require painting or repainting.

And the deck divides up its surface area into distinct areas by mixing two different colors of Trex deck board to create a pattern.

The pattern uses what's called a "breaker board" in the darker color down the center of the deck to divide the cooking and eating areas from the general sitting space. The darker color also makes a ring around the outside of the deck in what's called a "picture frame" or "racetrack" deck design.

The color choices are perfect. The lighter Pebble Grey color is a fan favorite for its crisp, silvery finish. But pairing it with the blue-gray Winchester Gray color really helps the breaker board and picture frame stand out, without losing the cool gray feel of the deck as a whole.

To help your deck submission stand out, here are a couple of our favorite photo-taking tips:

  • Try several different angles: a high shot can show off more of your deck surface. A low shot lets everyone experience your deck the way you do when walking up to it. Try a couple different angles to really show off all aspects of your deck.
  • Include your decor and furniture: once you've completed your deck upgrade, don't take your photos until you've moved your furniture, grill, outdoor decorations and personal touches back into your space. We love seeing lived-in spaces that homeowners are already enjoying!
  • Wait for good weather: it's tempting to snap photos the moment you finish a project. But if it's raining or the sky is covered in dark and gloomy clouds, wait for a dry deck and brighter lighting to really show off the best side of your space.
