Deck of the Month: May 2023

Deck of the Month Winner for May 2023

Congratulations to Michi B. of Montana, who wins our Deck of the Month award for May 2023!

May 2023's Deck of the Month, using Feeney cable within classic wood posts

Michi's deck view is unbelievable - Big Sky Country at its finest. And that makes cable railing a brilliant choice. The sweeping, horizontal lines are a perfect match for the panoramic landscape, and using cable within wood posts and rails allows this deck to keep its rustic charm while maximizing the view.

Learn More About This Beautifully Modern Twist On Classic Wood Deck Railing

We love this deck's use of Feeney CableRail to add a modern flair to classic wood railing. Michi and Bud Monts Contracting worked with DecksDirect project planner Liz to find cable railing kits compatible with the existing wood posts so the deck could keep those character-rich wood posts and rails.

"Thank you so much for all your help with this," Michi told us via email. "We are over the moon and you made it so easy. Thank you, thank you!"

Feeney CableRail

With wood posts already in place, Michi's deck was perfect for Feeney CableRail kits. The kits come with preattached fittings that makes it easy to attach them to wood posts, with most of the hardware hidden within the post.

Feeney has perfected the art of cable railing: the stainless steel cable runs are polished and twisted so the metal doesn't flash or glint in the sun. Instead of reflecting light, the cables blend subtly into the background so nothing gets in the way of your deck view.

To help your deck submission stand out, here are a couple of our favorite photo-taking tips:

  • Try several different angles: a high shot can show off more of your deck surface. A low shot lets everyone experience your deck the way you do when walking up to it. Try a couple different angles to really show off all aspects of your deck.
  • Include your decor and furniture: once you've completed your deck upgrade, don't take your photos until you've moved your furniture, grill, outdoor decorations and personal touches back into your space. We love seeing lived-in spaces that homeowners are already enjoying!
  • Wait for good weather: it's tempting to snap photos the moment you finish a project. But if it's raining or the sky is covered in dark and gloomy clouds, wait for a dry deck and brighter lighting to really show off the best side of your space.
