General Barrette Decking FAQs

What Are Barrette Deck Boards Made Of?

Barrette composite deck boards are made from a combination of polypropylene and natural hardwood. Barrette’s unique hardwood composite decking makeup, dubbed the Poly-Pro Advantage by the manufacturer, lends it several key advantages over traditional composite. According to Barrette, its CoolTrac feature makes decking 136% more slip-resistant and keeps your walking surface up to 18% cooler than traditional composite decking.

Where Is Barrette Decking Manufactured?

Barrette decking is produced by Barrette Outdoor Living. Barrette is made in the USA at a manufacturing facility in Maine.

Does Barrette Decking Come With A Warranty?

Barrette covers its decking with a 25-year residential warranty and a 10-year commercial warranty.

Does Barrette Decking Get Hot On Sunny Days?

All decking materials, whether pressure-treated wood decking or premium composite decking, will absorb heat from direct sunlight. While composite material typically retains more heat than wood, the color of your decking will have a bigger impact on heat-absorption than composition does. If your deck surface is in direct sunlight, choose a lighter-colored deck board to stay cooler in the heat.

Barrette decking is designed to stay cooler than most composites - the brand’s CoolTrac technology keeps boards 18% cooler than traditional composite decking.

Are Barrette Decking And DuraLife Decking The Same Thing?

Yes. Barrette Outdoor Living rebranded DuraLife decking to be called Barrette Outdoor Living Decking. It’s the same premium quality decking with the same unique hardwood composite mixture and Poly-Pro Advantage, under a different name.

Choosing Your Barrette Decking

What’s The Difference Between Barrette Siesta and Barrette MVP Decking?

Both of Barrette’s decking lines are made of the same durable composite material with the Poly-Pro Advantage. Barrette Siesta boards have flat bottoms for maximum strength. Barrette MVP boards have scalloped bottoms that use less composite material for lighter-weight and lower-cost boards.

Both Barrette Siesta and MVP lines feature grooved edges for use with hidden fasteners. For square edge boards, check out Barrette starter boards or Square Edge Drink Rail boards.

What’s The Difference Between Grooved Edge Boards And Square Edge Boards?

Grooved edge boards feature a long ridge or groove cut into the long edges of the deck board. Grooved edge boards are designed for use with hidden deck fasteners. Traditional square edge boards are for use with other fasteners or in places where the edge of the deck board will be visible, like the outsides of your deck, stair treads, or drink rails.

How Do I Hide The Screws While Installing Barrette Decking?

Barrette decking comes with a companion hidden fastener system to hide your screws. You can check out the Barrette Fastenator system here. Hidden fasteners screw into your deck frame joists and hold down your deck boards using Barrette decking’s grooved edges. If you use the Fastenator System, make sure you get grooved-edge deck boards. Our team of deck project planners can build you a package to make sure you get all the right parts.

You can also hide screws by using a plug system. In a plug system, screws drive down through the top of your deck boards and leave a small hole to be filled by a color-matching plug. You can browse the Pro Plug System by Starborn or the FastenMaster Cortex plug system to find plugs custom-made from the same material as your Barrette deck boards for a perfect color and texture match.

Barrette Decking Maintenance

Do I Have To Stain Barrette Composite Deck Boards?

No. Unlike wood, Barrette composite decking never requires staining or sealing.

How Do I Clean Barrette Deck Boards?

Compared to wood decking, composite decking is incredibly easy to clean. All it takes is three simple steps:

  1. Sweep off your deck surface to clear debris like leaves or pine needles.
  2. Brush your deck with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristle brush
  3. Rinse your deck surface with fresh, clean water.

That’s it! There’s no heavy cleaning required.

You can watch this video for more details on how to clean your deck.

Can I Use A Pressure Washer To Clean Barrette Deck Boards?

No. Barrette Outdoor Living does not recommend using a pressure washer to clean your deck surface, as pressure-washing can damage your composite decking.
