Preparing Your Deck for Fall

Oct 18, 2017 | Posted in How-to Tips By Jaclyn

Preparing Your Deck for the Changing Seasons

The 2017 deck season is quickly coming to an end, and DecksDirect is here to help you prepare your deck for the changing seasons. As we say goodbye to the sunshine and warm weather, we want to ensure that your deck is in the best shape possible to handle fall and winter. You’ll need at least 2 days of dry and moderate weather for the best results in prepping your deck for fall.

Those ketchup spills and dirty foot prints that your deck gathered all summer need to be scrubbed clean so that they don’t become permanent this winter. Make sure to clean any debris that may be stuck between the deck boards and sweep away any loose dirt before washing. With a little elbow grease, those summer stains will be a distant memory.

DecksDirect carries a variety of products to help you prepare your deck this fall.

Penofin's three-step system to restore & prepare your exterior wood surfaces for the fall & winter seasons.

These cleaners & brighteners are specially designed to clean & brighten exterior wood decks.

This composite cleaner is used for periodic maintenance to keep your composite deck looking its best.

This two-part system puts life back into your grey deck, restoring the natural beauty of dense hardwoods like Ipe.

Decks age over the years, so routine inspections are crucial to prevent small problems from becoming large and expensive issues. Take a good look at your deck and check for any easy fixes. If a board is loose, nail it back down! If a fastener is loose, tighten it back up! If the hardware is beginning to rust, replace it! These are relatively easy fixes that homeowners can do themselves.

It is crucial to look for any structural damage caused by moisture or animals. An easy way to check for rot is to stick the tip of a screwdriver into posts and joists. If the screwdriver easily pokes into the wood, your deck is showing signs of deterioration and it may be time for a renovation. Now is a good time to schedule a thorough inspection with a deck builder. One of our favorite local pros recommends getting an early jump on your project:

“It's never too early to start planning a deck project. The best time would be the end of the season (Fall) for a project to start the beginning of next season (Spring).” - Tim, Phi Decks

Kameleon screws work great with composite decking material. The design enlarges the screw hole and increases its drawing strength.

For great results in cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine decking, use TRIO Wood Deck Screws to secure boards without stripping or splitting.

HEADCOTE 305 Screws have a stainless steel design that can be color-matched to hardwood and composite deck boards.

TOPLoc by TimberTech are compatible with many TimberTech finishes and are the best option for dense boards.

Once your deck is clean and repaired, it is important to apply a water-resistant sealant. This will protect your deck from mildew and the damage that leaves, snow, ice, and other debris can cause. DecksDirect offers a wide variety of stains to keep out the elements.

Ipe Oil enhances the beauty of your hardwood deck and protects it from UV rays, water, mold, and mildew all at the same time.

UV Plus provides mildew resistance while the natural oils nourish the wood, reducing any warping, cracking or shrinking of the wood.

RenewAll by Penofin is a thick elastomeric formula that covers splinters, cracks, stains, and general unevenness giving your deck a refreshed look.

This formula is easy to apply and maintains the beauty of your wood deck while keeping out the elements in any environment.

One thing that many people don’t think of when preparing their deck for fall is the area around the deck. Make sure to trim any trees, bushes, or foliage that may have grown closer to your deck during the summer. Keeping them at least a foot away from your deck will prevent mold, moss, and rot.

There are also a few things that you can do throughout the colder months to ensure that you will have a beautiful deck to enjoy for years to come. As you’re raking the fallen leaves from your yard, don’t forget to make sure to clear off your deck as well. Leaves can add harmful moisture and weight to your deck that can lead to decay and damage. They also serve as nests for critters trying to escape the cold weather.

Before we know it, snow will become a daily reality for those of us in colder climates. Whether you get a dusting or a blizzard, make sure to shovel your deck. Removing snow and ice will help keep your deck dry and protect its finish.

Give yourself a pat on the back! You’ve done the hard work to ensure your deck survives the winter and is ready for another outdoor season come spring time.

DecksDirect is here to help you get the products you need to complete your fall deck maintenance to-do list. Our team strives to exceed your expectations by providing honest, accurate, and friendly service that you can trust.

Because we are the nation’s largest stocking online retailer of deck accessories, you can trust that nearly all items will ship the same business day if the order is placed by 3:30pm CST, Monday-Friday (excluding special order items).

Penofin Penetrating Oils

Penofin Penetrating Oil

Penofin is the leading brand in wood oil finishes, and Penofin Penetrating Oils keep your deck boards protected from the sun's harmful UV rays, mold and mildew. Penofin's stains and sealers can be used on brand new wood or bring aged wood back to life. These are not just your typical stain and sealers however, Penofin's oils actually replace natural wood oils that are lost in the wood during the milling process. This gives you a truly beautiful new look to your deck boards that you know will increase the longevity of your deck.

Penofin doesn't only deal in stains and sealers; they also have strippers, brighteners and cleaners available to prepare your boards to be stained. The Penofin Pro-Tech Complete Wood Care Kit is a three-step system to restore and prepare your wood surface for perfect stain results. Step 1 is the Penofin Pro-Tech Stripper and you only use this step if you need to remove a non-Penofin oil-based finish. The stripper softens most coatings in less than 30 minutes and will not raise the grain of your wood. Step 2 is the Penofin Pro-Tech Cleaner. Simply mix these powerful concentrated granules with water and apply it to your deck boards to clean stains, sap, grease, grime, mold and mildew. The final step is Penofin Pro-Tech Brightener. If you are having problems with tannins or watermarks on your new wood you can use Pro-Tech Brightener and remove all mill glaze. You can also use this concentrated formula to rejuvenate and brighten old wood that has grayed and weathered overtime.

Penofin Mistakes, Misperceptions & Review

Jun 17, 2013 | Posted in Product Spotlights By Angelene

The Penofin Review - What you need to know & why we love it!

DecksDirect has been selling and using Penofin Stains for over 4 years. With our knowledge and experience, we can help clear up some common mistakes and misperceptions while sharing why we love Penofin Stains.  Whether you are a seasoned professional or do-it-yourselfer, we can give you the know-how to minimize mistakes so you get fantastic results.

The Difference

Penofin is different from other stains on the market because it doesn't sit on the surface, it penetrates deep into the wood, protecting it from the inside out.  Penofin is made from Brazilian Rosewood Oil that enhances the look of the wood while preventing mold and mildew.

Common Mistakes

We don’t like to admit it, but even the best of us breeze past the instructions from time to time.  It is always recommended to read Penofin instructions thoroughly before application, but we’ve compiled notes on a few common mistakes and mishaps to look out for.

Penofin don't forget to wipe

  • Forgetting to Wipe: This is the most common mistake people make with Penofin. If the surface is sticky, shiny, or dark, chances are you forgot to wipe off the excess oil. This mistake is easily remedied by cleaning the surface with Penofin Pro-Tech Cleaner – Step #2 and allowing the wood to dry before applying a light coat of Penofin, remembering to wipe the surface this time.
  • Not Soaking Rags: As the instructions state, any rags or cloths that have come in contact with Penofin Oil must be soaked in water. If you do not, the rags may spontaneously combust (burst into flames).
  • Not Using Brightener on New Wood: Wood contains extractives such as tannins, which can migrate to the surface and cause discoloration. This black coloring is often mistaken for mildew. This bleeding is much more common with new wood, so it is recommended to use Penofin Pro-Tech Brightener – Step #3 on all new wood before applying Penofin stain.

Common Misperceptions

Recurring misunderstandings can give products a bad rap. But with a little bit more knowledge, these misperceptions can be corrected to restore Penofin’s good name.

Penofin turned the deck black  – If your deck turned black after applying Penofin, chances are it’s not actually Penofin’s fault. As explained above, it is probably because the Penofin wasn’t properly wiped after application or the naturally-occurring tannins in the wood have crept to the surface. Refer to the remedies above for the best solutions.

Thinking it will last forever – Just like wood, Penofin stain does not last forever. On average, you can expect Penofin to perform for 9-24 months on horizontal surfaces and 2-5 years on vertical surfaces. Many times for new wood, especially dense hardwoods like IPE, Penofin may need to be applied twice in the first year.

Our Review

At DecksDirect, we carry the highest quality brands and products, so you can trust that when you shop with us you are choosing from the best stain and sealer on the market. We know that Penofin is the top choice when it comes to wood oil, which is why we use it ourselves and don’t hesitate to recommend it to our customers.  Penofin stain is easy to apply and clean-up, and gives wonderful results that protect and enhance woods natural appearance.

    • Trim excess vegetation from around the deck.
    • Clean debris and dirt from composite, wood, or aluminum deck boards and railing.
    • We don't recommend power-washing, as it tends to strip the wood or composite surface. Instead use a product like Penofin Pro-Tech Cleaner with a brush.
