Using a Power Washer on Composite Decking
Whether you're renovating your home's older deck or creating a brand new outdoor living space for your family from scratch, installing composite deck boards can change your deck perspective! Made from incredibly durable materials, composite deck boards are fade, rot and mold resistant so you can skip the yearly staining and painting and spend that time relaxing in peace. But a major question that a lot of homeowners, DIY deck builders, and deck owners ask is, "Can I clean my composite decking with a power washer or pressure washer?"
In short, the answer is no. Composite decking brands like Trex, TimberTech, Deckorators, Fiberon, Barrette, Envision and more all recommend skipping the tough power washers or pressure washers for a safer solution.
Power washers or pressure washers can easily strip or damage composite decking while being used. If using a non-fan tipped nozzle or hesitating in one spot for too long, those composite boards can become dented or chipped.
Composite decking brands recommend giving your composite deck boards a thorough cleaning at least once a year to remove any sap, pollen, or debris that may have accumulated.
Simply use gentle liquid dishwashing soap such as Dawn® or Joy® mixed with some warm tap water and scrub the board with a clean rag, soft bristled brush, or broom. When the scrubbing is complete, rinse away the soapy residue with clean water. If you desire then towel dry the deck lightly, or allow it to dry in the sunshine.
